Keith dedicó la mayor parte de su tiempo a investigar las condiciones de vida de las mujeres, que en abrumadora mayoría aun continúan cubriendo sus rostros con el tradicional velo y llevan una vida de completa reclusión, a tal extremo, que el marido libio respetable, solamente ve, según se supone, los rostros sin velo de dos mujeres: su madre y su esposa. La señora Keith logró conquistar la confianza de todos, a tal punto, que las mujeres libias casadas le revelaban sus problemas íntimos, y hasta confraternizó con los arrogantes hombres, bruscos pero gentiles, bondadosos e inescrupulosos.
