De origen humilde, logró terminar sus estudios gracias a una beca en la Escuela Normal de Ciencias de Londres. Trabajó como preceptor y, más tarde, como periodista, hasta que, en 1895, se inició como escritor con una serie de novelas que se convertirían en pioneras de un género: el de la ciencia-ficción. Las novelas La máquina del tiempo, La isla del doctor Moreau, El hombre invisible y La guerra de los mundos dieron a H. G. Wells una enorme popularidad. Todas ellas resumen una de las constantes de su pensamiento: mezclar la mentalidad científica y la conciencia política, mostrar una preocupación por el mal uso que se pueda hacer de las nuevas tecnologías y oponerse obstinadamente a la militarización de la ciencia. Las concepciones ideológicas de Wells fueron desarrolladas en diversas utopías sociológicas, entre las que destaca su libro Una utopía moderna, que le llevó a adherirse al socialismo reformista de la Sociedad Fabiana. Sin embargo, los últimos años de la vida de H. G. Wells se vieron empañados por el creciente conflicto interior entre su fe en el hombre y su conciencia de la irracionalidad del mundo moderno. El 13 de agosto de 1946, Wells falleció en Londres, a los ochenta años, tras sobrevivir a dos guerras mundiales y a uno de los períodos más agitados de la historia.
